My hostal: Casa San Ildefonso, which is lovely. There are parakeets in the courtyard, along with tons of plants.

My dinner: Enmoladas (Enchiladas in mole sauce) and Pan de Muerto at Cafe El Popular. Muy bien and only about $7.

Pan de Muerto is a special bread only served around the time of the Dia de los Muertos celebrations. According to Wikipedia, it is said that the bread is bathed with blood of the people sacrificed in honor to the gods Izcoxauhqui or Huehuetéotl. Thank goodness it tasted nothing like that, just like a light fluffy bread with sesame seeds. Mine was shaped like the hot cross buns we eat at Easter, only larger, and apparently the cross has a different meaning. Again according to Wikipedia, it is shaped with a small sphere in the center of the upper part representing a skull and a quill representing bones. This form symbolizes the four courses of the universe. Sesame seeds aren't the only topping - I'm seeing some decorated with red skulls, some with flowers, and burgers using the bread as a bun, but mostly a bunch with colored sugar. I will have to try some other varieties while I am here. Particularly since I won't be here for el Dia de los Muertos!
