Lunch: Cafe Popular again. This time I also got Sopa Azteca and I'm so glad I did. Basic description: a tomato-based soup with tortilla strips, avocado, chile de árbol (tree chile?) and epazote (a tea). Mine also had a huge melty hunk of queso blanco in it. It was delicious. I also got my new favorite Enmoladas again and another Pan de Muerto. I also took a picture this time.

It may not look like much but let me tell you!

Purchased: A "silver" cross necklace for $12. I feel safe here, but can't hurt! The lady behind the shop counter was very nice and chatted with me in Spanish. She asked where I was from, how much my purse cost in Nueva York (about $4500 pesos, I did the math - it's a cheap purse) and if it was pretty there, told me my eyes were red (not enough sleep last night) but pretty, and asked me for $10 extra pesos. Para hacer cambio? I asked. I don't think that's exactly how to ask, To make change? But yes was the answer, although I would have liked $0.95 in change instead of a $100 bill because I use coins for bottles of water and the bus. Está bien, no me importa mucho (it's ok, I don't really care). I like my necklace. Makes me feel more like a local.

The shop had all sorts of odd charms, a wrench charm, for example. Tempting because they were so random but, I have drinks tonight with a local guy, my age, Ness, and $12 is already more than my $10/day spending budget. I'm under enough elsewhere, but I'll take a good excuse not to buy a wrench charm where I can get one. We're going nearby to a mescal bar with live music, jazz, called El Bósforo, which makes me think of the Bosphorus Straight in Turkey. Two friends and I got ripped off at a rooftop bar overlooking both the Bosphorus and, further off but still very visible, the Blue Mosque. Another cool trip and that was a gorgeous scene, but boy, did they rip us off. Just kept bringing food we didn't order and then charged us for all of it and wouldn't let us leave - physically blocked us from the elevator and then! Made us feel bad for not tipping them any extra. I don't think the bar is either named after the Bosphorus or anything like that, because both my hostel and Ness recommended it, and the reviews online speak for themselves. I'm glad Mexico isn't like Spain, and 6pm was a reasonable time to meet and practice Spanish (me) and English (him).
