Mexico City: Night 3 & Tinder Date

Last night's bar, El Bósforo: When the bartender asked what kind of mescal we wanted, Ness, my "date," asked for one for an extranjero (an extraterrestrial aka alien or foreigner, me!). The menu was all regional mescals, so first we choose a region, then the mescal. We tried two mescals, deciding on the Chato de Oaxaca, which she told us had an aroma of plantains, which it certainly did. We had two of those and then one of two craft beers on the menu, Leon, supposedly a dark malt, but tasted very light to me. Ness said it is his favorite Mexican beer actually. He does not like Corona. Cost for all 6 drinks: $320 or about $18. My understanding is that you do tip in Mexico like the U.S. (I have been), but Ness took care of that, I just gave him some cash.

The bar itself is dark and small, as you can see, and got very crowded with nice young locals by 8pm, and even more by 9pm, when I left in an Uber. Great music that wasn't too loud so we could hear each other speak broken Spanish and English. If it weren't for all the Spanish, I thought it could have been a cool bar in Brooklyn, until we went to the small loft upstairs, where I was was surprised to find nothing but two people making out on a two-seater leather sofa against the back wall, and thin Persian-ish carpets (too dark to see). Sorry lovers, because we started a trend and soon many more were upstairs with us. Ness and I stood overlooking the bar scene for a while and then all of a sudden we turned around and we were the only ones standing - the space was completely filled with people sitting on the floor. Ness told me that not only is this type of bar common in Mexico City (in fact, friends of friends of his were opening their own bar like this in the Rome district tonight, and would I like to come), but sitting on the floor was a thing at bars although he didn't understand it. Too bad it wasn't another night because it was already past my 8pm self-imposed curfew (for safety), hence the Uber, which I would otherwise not take (only $3.50 but they add up, and I'm trying to stick to walking and public transportation).

Ness and I now follow each other on Instagram and I hope he comes to New York! It was a fun night stumbling over words and past or present or present perfect, etc tenses with him.
The Uber is also worth mentioning because I loved my driver, Miguel. We spoke, mostly in Spanish but a little English, where am I from, Nueva York, ah Welcome to the Jungle! Miguel loves Guns N Roses. There was a brief duet. He has never been to the U.S. but his brother has lived in North Carolina for 8 years. He asked, Courtney like Courtney Love? Rocker? And Hollywood? So I was like, Si! Como Courtney Love y Courteney Cox, pero yo soy lo mejor Courtney. No no, chiste! Trying to say Yes, like those two, but I am the best Courtney, no no, just kidding. Close enough. Then I found out that I actually AM in a peligroso (dangerous) area, so he walked me half a block to my door. There were a bunch of groups of nice looking people around but why take chances. Five stars for Miguel!
