Alfajors: Along with Tostadas, I fell in love with alfajors while I was in Buenos Aires. The common thread tying my favorite alfajors together was this: simplicity. The type is called "maicena" and it's a corn flour cookie with no coating (the rest are covered in meringue or chocolate), filled with dulce de leche, and sprinkled with coconut.

I tried them at Piacerre (GOOD, the simple kind), Havanna (was told they were the best, I completely disagree. I got the classic meringue-coated and they were probably my least favorite, the dark chocolate covered were good but not the best), Cafe Martinez (chocolate covered, decent), La Portenita (love everything at this place, my neighborhood Panaderia) where they have these delicious mini maicena alfajors:

And the absolute best are these, Tranvia, which you can buy at the counter at Cafe Duo, and also at Tienda de Cafe (where they are white labeled but made by the same people) and a few other places. Look for this label/address on the back:

THAT is how good they are. I ate them all too soon for a picture.

Second best, I bought in Bariloche at El Molinito. I found the maicena alfajors without a wrapper at cafes and bakeries reliably good:

A couple of the grocery store alfajors I tried too were not bad, chocolate covered, and very cheap in comparison at 8p (50 cents):

This one was pretty dreadful. I think it was just stale but watch out:

These I got in Bariloche, at an entire shop dedicated to Alfajors! I figured they must be good.

And these are just the alfajors I snapped on film! Yikes! I think the answer is yes, I am an addict!
